Mise-en-scene video feedback and learner response

Mise-en-scene video feedback and learner response

1) Type up your feedback from your teacher in full.

  • Technically, this is a good recreation- using the phone sound from the original scene.
  • From a mise en scene perspective, this is more of an update rather than a faithful recreation. Using a mobile (nice touch on 'No Caller ID') is not quite right to the original but original but obviously would make more sense today.
  • The setting is another aspect of mise en scene that could be stronger- a real house/ domestic setting would be better but you've chosen a good location in school in the circumstances.

2) Type up a summary of the feedback you have had from the rest of the class - bullet points is fine.

WWW:

  • good dialogue
  • good camerawork
  • good pace of the video
  • acting was spot on
  • voice over was very good
  • conversation looked natural
  • faithful recreation
  • good lighting

EBI:

  • lip syncing was a bit off
  • the ending was abrupt
  • intro didn't have audio
  • does she chew gum in the original?
  • setting- should of filmed in an actual kitchen
  • props- should have used an old fashioned telephone instead of mobile phone
  • use own ghost face audio- copyrighted from original video
  •  black screen in between- there was no pause in the original scene

3) Use all the feedback you've been given to write your own self-assessment of your video using WWW (What Went Well) and EBI (Even Better If...)

  • In my recreation of Scream, I think the voice over was done precisely however the lip syncing for one of the scenes was a bit off. I think that the actress acting did a really good job because Isabella was capable of precisely recreating the original actresses facial expressions and body language during the phone chat. I could have done our own version of the voice over for Ghost face as I took it from the original. I should have added audio to the introduction and the end of the video to create more tension and suspense.

4) Now reflect on your own work in more detail. How did your planning (script, shot list) help clarify and develop your ideas?

Firstly, I wrote down the script of what the two characters say in the original clip. The planning was quite successful. When watching the original Scream video, I noted down the camera angle changes and the way the character talks on the phone. I also noted down the setting, which took place in a kitchen.

5) Thinking technically, how could you improve your work for future videos? (E.g. filming, editing, audio levels etc.)

I'll need to practise lip-syncing audios in the future to ensure that they exactly match the videos. Additionally, I need to play around and choose appropriate sound and video effects to make the video more realistic. I need to practice editing and making the videos look more professional. I could try using different lighting techniques to make particular scenes look naturalistic.

6) Finally, what have you learned regarding the importance of mise-en-scene in film and television? Write a paragraph to answer this.

The importance of mise en scene is that it makes the film/TV show more realistic and alive. Costume creates their character and we can visually translate the characters personality, traits, history and how they develop as their character. Lighting sets the overall tone and mood in the performance. Lighting can reflect the time of day the scene is being recorded and reflects the characters emotions. Actors are individually separated into their own roles depending on their acting skills and communication. Makeup changes the actors, either making them look older or younger. This can strengthen the characters personality and help the story line. Setting creates the theme of the movie and the type of genre the performance is trying to create.
